Announcement after the 8th sitting of the Students’ Parliament of the UW for the 2023/2024 term
06 06 2024
We would like to inform you that during the 8th sitting of the Students’ Parliament of the UW for the 2023/2024 term:
Parliament held by-elections. The following were elected:
- Kacper Świerad (WPiA) as a member of Revision Commission of the Students’ Union of the UW;
- Zuzanna Bastek (IAiE) as a member of Legal-Regulatory Commission of the Students’ Parliament of the UW.
Parliament discussed the situation in Palestine and the student protest at Autonomia Park.
At the request of a group of members, the agenda was supplemented by an item covering a discussion of the student occupation of Autonomia Park near the UW Main Campus. A representative of the strikers came to the sitting and presented to the Parliament their demands for standing up for Palestine in the face of the armed conflict in Gaza and for the UW to break its cooperation with Israeli institutions. After almost an hour of discussion, the participants agreed on the idea of setting up a working group to draft a resolution on the issue.
Parliament adopted a resolution on the condemnation of sexual violence at the University of Warsaw.
Parliament expressed disappointment at the lack of satisfactory action requested in the previous document of this kind, Resolution No. 30/2021/2022 of 28 March 2022. The new resolution emphasises the validity of the demands expressed two years ago, as well as including a number of other proposals for changes to the procedures for dealing with undesirable behaviour – all with the aim of ensuring adequate safety for the student community.
Parliament adopted a resolution on student participation in the appointment of heads of university-wide organisational units at the University of Warsaw.
The adopted document is linked to the ongoing period of elections of unit authorities at the University. Parliament drew attention to the need to standardise the principles of student participation in the procedure for appointing the heads of university-wide organisational units which organise and provide teaching and learning in fields of study. It was pointed out that in the case of this type of unit, unlike in the case of faculties, there are no general provisions that define the manner or even the minimum participation of students in the filling of the said function.
Parliament adopted a resolution on expressing an opinion on the social campaign HeyEU! 4EU+ Alliance.
Parliament expressed its disapproval of the said campaign and appealed to the Alliance’s academic community to intervene in the project. The resolution highlighted the inadequate nature of the slogan used in the campaign, calling for the use of the offensive wording to be abandoned. It also called for an end to the posting of content supporting those running in this year’s European Parliament elections. Parliament reiterated that the actions of those in the Alliance community taken to promote the elections should be free of any electoral suggestion and focused solely on popularising active participation in the elections.
All three resolutions mentioned were adopted by acclamation.
